Vasectomy or Tubal Ligation? 

That is the question many couples may face when they have decided that their family is complete. It is a decision we made over 17 years ago and one that we have not regretted. To me having a vasectomy was the only option. Tubal ligation was just too risky, involved in-patient care and took a while to heal from. With me it was and out-patient procedure and except for a few minor restrictions things went back to normal soon.

Have you asked this same question? What was your answer?

I saw a similar post on here the other day in association with your question.

Why not just use birth control?
Why are you willing to get yourself snipped?

This scares me - the thought.

I think its a great choice to prevent unexpected late in life pregnancies. If the couple has no worry about STDs, and is willing to make the choice its not a problem at all. As you said it was only a small change for a couple days before you were back to normal. I wonder what the cost comparison is for a tubal ligation compared to buying birth control until you can no longer reproduce?

I too agree that the snip is a wonderful choice when the family is complete. Birth control has risks-either of failure or risks of side effects from hormonal control.

Tubal-well it's surgery of a far more major nature than a vasectomy. On the other hand if the woman is having a c-section and chooses to do it at the same time, I think it becomes a more viable option.

We are actually having this discussion currently. I was informed that surgery would be a little more risky since I am a cancer risk. I have 4 children and the youngest is 4 months old. The issue I have is it appears to be easier for me to get help covering costs of me having surgery than for him getting a vasectomy. Anyone else run into this? Maybe I am just looking in the wrong places and asking the wrong questions.

My wife and I had this discussion several years ago after our third child. I decided that I'd get snipped but took too long to get around to doing it - so she went and got snipped.

I don't know. I think you have to be 100% done to do it, and I know so many people who had "baby-opps" after they were done and can't imagine life without them.

There's nothing wrong with the man having a vasectomy. It's a safe procedure and much easier and safer than what a woman would have to do.

It shows how responsible the couple is when they choose this type of birth control.
