Prescription Medicine is todays youth choice.

I have a young friend who is into narcotic prescription medication. She started using when she hurt her foot, for the pain, now she can't stop using it. When her doctor won't prescribe her more she becomes ill and sick. She has been abusing it for a while.

I hear this is a big epedimic in the younger generation and even high schoolers. They buy and sell this stuff illegally.

Its true, an estimated 20 percent of people in the United States have used prescription drugs for nonmedical reasons. Pain killers now ranks second—only behind marijuana—as the Nation’s most prevalent illegal drug problem. Some people abuse prescription medication because they view it as "safe" way to get high. Its not.

This is definitely becoming an issue. Soccer moms have begun to take their children’s ADHD medication for energy and weight loss. Also, Adderall and Ridalin have become a crutch for many college students. They believe that only by using these addictive drugs will they be able to deal with the pressures of school life. As gbyrd said, they believe it is safe because it is regulated.

Only people who have a predilection to abusing drugs and alcohol become hooked on pain medication. These people would also got hooked on mouth wash and antihistamines if given the opportunity. That people and magazines keep spreading the stories of people who were in pain whose doctors just prescribed pain killers and then they became addicts are just that -- stories and half truths.

These myths make it too difficult for people who are truly suffering with pain to get the medication they need. Too often people are left to suffer because of the myth that they will all become hooked.

It's not true that most people who use and need pain medication will ever become addicted. People who are really in pain don't get any of the side effects that addicts crave. If you look into many of the stories of addicts that are hooked on prescription medication, these people have a background as addicts.

I doubt that anyone takes prescription pills to get high because they think they are safe. I think they take them because they will take anything they can get their hands on. Only drug abusive types get hooked, the rest of us are really suffering and should have the right to expect relief from our doctors.

Yes, I agree on what you are saying. I had to see my doctor and he gave me the generic medication instead of the band name. After a few days of taking the generic meds I had to practically pled with my doctor to give me the brand name meds. The generic medication was not working.
