Diabetes and a Vegan Diet

I have a good friend who is diabetic and we are looking at incorporating a lot of vegan style meals into his diet. Do you do this or have you heard of it?

Vegan is a rather strict way of eating. If you are just incorporating new ideas into his diet for health, then perhaps you should start with simple vegetarian dishes. If he starts to eat more meat free meals then he will be building up his health, more than just for diabetes.

As a first step maybe he should look into the American Diabetes Association suggestions for a good diabetic diet.

Honestly a vegan diet won't help him a whole lot if he is eating a lot of fruits and pastas, which ultimately may cause spikes in the blood sugar.

He needs to be focusing on those things that cause sugar spikes rather than changing his diet so drastically which could make things really hard on him.

I agree with DanaS. There are a lot of sugars and carbohydrates in pasta and fruit and without the meat in the diet there are limited ways to get the protein to help offset the affects. If I were your friend I'd be very careful and talk to my Dr first.
