Asprin (Danger!)

My eight year old had a headache tonight. I had heard that you never give children an aspirin if they are running a fever, as it may cause Reyes Syndrome; so, I called the nurse help line to verify whether it was safe to give them an aspirin for a headache.

The nurse told me under no circumstances do you give a child aspirin. Even the smallest risk of brain damage is too much. Thankfully, she was right. Even though he only had a headache at the time, he is now running a fever. I am so glad I called. He didn't present with a fever to begin with, so I assumed it would be safe.

No one under the age of 21 should take aspirin at all. It makes me wonder how we all grew up taking aspirin, riding bikes without helmets and chewing gum and running at the same time. I'm amazed that as many of us grew up as we did.
