My eight year old had a headache tonight. I had heard that you never give children an aspirin if they are running a fever, as it may cause Reyes Syndrome; so, I called the nurse help line to verify whether it was safe to give them an aspirin for a headache.
The nurse told me under no circumstances do you give a child aspirin. Even the smallest risk of brain damage is too much. Thankfully, she was right. Even though he only had a headache at the time, he is now running a fever. I am so glad I called. He didn't present with a fever to begin with, so I assumed it would be safe. |
